Mid-Term Writing

DUE Thursday June 24th

 

GOALS

  1. Read one book from our Must Read modules
  2. In your own words, write a review of that book
  3. Say what you like and don't like about all four of the following: story, characters, art, and the story's conclusion
  4. Identify what kind of story it is, sometimes called genre: morality tale, historical fiction, fiction, science-fiction, horror, gothic horror, mythology, noir, detective story, revenge tale, biography, memoir
  5. Incorporate two outside sources (a good/positive opinion and a bad/poor/critical opinion) 
  6. Compare your own opinions to critics' opinions:
    • use 1 "pro" quote from an outside source, somebody's review where they say "good things" that you may or may not agree with, properly cite it
    • use 1 "con" quote from an outside source, somebody's review where they say "bad things" or are very critical, and you may or may not agree with, properly cite it

FORMAT

  • Minimum 3-pages of your writing plus 1 works cited page for 4-pages total
  • Maximum 4-pages of your writing plus 1 works cited for 5-pages total
  • Times or Times New Roman font, 12 point, double-spaced
  • Works cited must include your two required outside sources

FAQs

Can my 1st Report and/or 2nd Report be used in this Mid-Term Paper? Yes, you may use, re-use, edit, and incorporate prior writing work into this. Think of your 1st Report and 2nd Report as research, building it up and using it here is okay. You could also use parts or a part of your Speed Review in-class writing activity.

What counts as a source? See the Mid-Term Rubric, which has pages at the end about use of sources and best sources to use, such as sources that are specifically about culture, visual culture, art, popular culture, and comics.


SCORING, Rubric

Max. 4 points in each category below

  1. Explanation of work, the overview of what you're reviewing: story, characters, art, conclusion, and genre
  2. History: where does this book fit into the history of comics, reference any of our lecture materials or the comics timeline, you may use another timeline, history, or historiography but cite that outside source in your works cited
  3. Analysis: seeing, reading, and understanding what things mean and why, the concept(s)
  4. Opinion: state your position, what you like or don't like and why
  5. Evidence "Pro": use 1 outside source, another review another critique, to boost your opinions, this is an item that "agrees with" your own
  6. Evidence "Con": find 1 outside source against your opinions, use it in your argument
  7. Contrasting Issues: identifying where things are different and reflecting on those differences, be it between your opinions or some other opinion(s)
  8. Connecting, overall flow of writing, synthesis of ideas, overview, your opinions, your sources, all mesh together
  9. Inference(s), what could be done differently or better, and why
  10. Conclusion(s), based on all of the above, did you enjoy or not enjoy reading this, would you recommend this to somebody else
