4th Report

DUE Monday July 5th

  • Of your 3rd book and 4th book from our Must Read or Also Read Lists, which one did you enjoy the most, and why?
    • This 3rd book and 4th book should have been used in your 3rd Report but if you've selected different books from our Reading List, that's okay.
    • You should have completely read at least one of these other books from our Reading List.
    • If it's a book you've previously read, and it's on our Reading List, that's a-okay.
  • Write a 1-2 page book report comparing the two, or a 1-page book report of 1 of them.
  • How and why did you enjoy the book?
    • How and why did you connect on a personal level with the book(s)?
    • Or did you not connect with one of them, and why?
    • What did you enjoy about the art, and why?
    • What about the story, why did it keep you interested?
    • The characters? Likeable? Loathsome? Who was the hero, who was the villain, and why? Cite specifics.
  • Use good grammar, write in complete sentences.
  • No bullet-points for this writing.
  • Typed up and submitted as a PDF.
  • Minimum 1-page of your writing
  • Maximum 2-pages of your writing

FAQs

Is this a book report? Yes, ideally you should have read both books to write this report. But, if you've only read some of each book, then that's okay and share your initial thoughts. Minimum Requirement: you need to have read one of these two books from your 3rd and 4th choices.

Since I have writing about my 3rd and 4th book in my 3rd Report can I use some of that 3rd Report writing in my 4th Report? Yes, you may use/re-use some 3rd Report writing, but be sure to meet the page count in this 4th Report: minimum 1-page, maximum 2-pages.

Do I need an outside quote for this? No, you do not need to use outside sources. This is a purely opinionated writing assignment. Write from your own point of view (POV).

Can I use any of my 3rd Report and 4th Report to write my Final Paper? Yes, for sure! You may use any writing from any of your Reports and incorporate it into your Final Paper, but be sure to form a cohesive Final Paper with transitions between differing ideas.

Worth 25-points

Weighted ×5, earning a 5 earns you a 25 (5×5=25).

  • a 5 is excellent (5×5=25), for writing that addressed your likes/dislikes of art, story, characters, and tone, and you have little to no spelling/grammar issues, you've given the reader a complete sense of what this book is about and why you like it
  • if a 4 (4×5=20), it's above average, addresses most of the topics or maybe does so incompletely, with some spelling/grammar issues, may feel incomplete in one or more of those areas
  • a 3 (3×5=15) isn't awful, but it only addresses some of the topics, with frequent spelling/grammar issues, missing a majority of information to give us a full sense of why you enjoyed the book, doesn't meet the page count requirement
  • you score a 2 (2×5=10) because it might have very little content addressed, too many spelling/grammar issues, lacks full background on the book, doesn't meet the page count requirement
  • earning a 1–0 (1×5=5 or 0×5=0) is for unsatisfactory, incomplete, or inappropriate work, zero (0) no work, doesn't meet the page count requirement

Email PDF to the instructor as an attachment on or before 11:30AM EST Monday July 5th.

3rd Report

DUE Monday June 28th

  • Write a 1-page to 2-page list.
  • Name 10 graphic novels that you believe should be "must reads" for somebody.
  • You do not need to have read these 10 books for this Report, just identify which 10 and why somebody should read them.
  • Of the 10 graphic novels, you must include 2 from our reading list:
    • EITHER 2 from the "Also Read" book list
    • OR 2 from the "Must Read" book list
    • for the 4th Report DUE July 5th, you will need to have read these 2 from Also Read and/or Must Read
  • In all, of the 10 books…
    • 2 have to be from our reading list
    • 9 of them must be new to you, not yet read by you
    • EXAMPLE HERE
    • in the 10, it's okay if you've read 1 of them already
  • Name the title of the book, author, and artist.
  • Under each book, write 2-4 sentences
    • Why do you want to read that book?
    • Why should somebody else read that book?
  • Bullet-points are okay when stating your Why items.
  • Use good grammar, write in complete sentences.
  • Minimum 1-page
  • Maximum 2-page
  • Times or Times New Roman font, 12 point, double-spaced
  • Name your typed-up paper Lastname-3rd-Report.pdf and email as an attachment to the instructor.

Worth 25-points

Weighted ×5, earning a 5 earns you a 25 (5×5=25).

  • a 5 is excellent (5×5=25), for writing that addresses the prompt above completely and appropriately, and you have little to no spelling/grammar issues, you've given the reader a complete sense of things
  • if a 4 (4×5=20), it's above average, addresses most of the topics but not all or not fully, with some spelling/grammar issues, may feel incomplete in one or more of those areas
  • a 3 (3×5=15) isn't awful, but it only addresses some of the topics, with frequent spelling/grammar issues, missing a majority of information or may have lots of problems transitioning between ideas, doesn't meet the page count requirement
  • you score a 2 (2×5=10) because it might have very little content addressed, too many spelling/grammar issues, lacks full background, doesn't meet the page count requirement
  • earning a 1–0 (1×5=5 or 0×5=0) is for unsatisfactory, incomplete, or inappropriate work, zero (0) no work, doesn't meet the page count requirement

Xtra Credit Challenge, earn up to 35/25 for a 140% on this.

OPTIONAL: Each student could earn up to +10 bonus points if your Report does one or more of the following…
  • Your list of 10 books says something "on the whole" about significant and important current, cultural, and/or historical/past issues.
  • If reading your 10 books educates, informs, inspires somebody, and it's clear why this is the case.
  • Your list could say something about you personally. If somebody read these 10 books you've recommended, they'd know more about your interests, you and your self.
  • To earn this +10, you have to go "beyond the surface" and get at more than just the art, more than just the design of the book. You have to go deep, get at something substantive
  • Once somebody has read your list, there should be a 1+1=3 effect, so that the sum of the books and your reviews say A LOT more than just one book would. See this example.

Email PDF to the instructor on or before 10:30AM EST Monday June 28th. Students will discuss their lists during class that Monday. Presenting your 3rd Report during class is a separate 20-point daily activity.

  • How and why did you connect on a personal level with that book?
  • What did you enjoy about the art, and why?
  • What about the story, why did it keep you interested?
  • The characters? Likeable? Loathsome? Who was the hero, who was the villain, and why? Cite specifics.
  • If you've read both books entirely, then that's awesome but not required. You can still complete this with having read only some of each book.
  • Use good grammar, write in complete sentences.
  • You may use bullet-points to write your likes and dislikes.
  • Typed up and submitted as a PDF.
  • Minimum 1-page of your writing
  • Maximum 2-pages of your writing

Can I use this 2nd Report writing in my Mid-Term Paper? Yes, whatever you write here, you may “scaffold up” this 2nd Report and 1st Report and use it in your upcoming June 24th Mid-Term Paper.
